Christian parents convicted of neglect after relying on prayer to heal baby girl with ‘baseball-sized’ face tumour
June 10, 2011

An abnormal growth of blood vessels on her left eye could have blinded her. But Christian couple Timothy and Rebecca Wyland relied on faith healing instead of taking infant daughter Alayna to a doctor. Her condition has now improved under state-ordered medical care but her parents have been convicted in Oregon of felony criminal mistreatment. Alayna was born in December 2009 and developed the blood vessels that covered her left eye and threatened her vision. But her parents belong to unorthodox...

Church and state cross at New Jersey high school graduation
June 6, 2011

In an admirable if slightly absurd effort to avoid liturgy and litigation, Church and State reached a compromise that will allow Neptune High School’s Class of 2011 to graduate June 17 inside a church building. Neptune (N.J.) school district officials will cover electric signs that read “Holiness to the Lord” and “So be ye Holy.” And they will remove all hymns, prayers and religious content from the ceremony,...

A controversial monastery in Rome – the scene of performances by lap-dancing nuns and "lifestyles that were probably not in keeping with that of a monk" – has been closed down on the orders of the Pope. The Santa Croce in Gerusalemme basilica, home to nuns and monks of the Cistercian order, is one of the oldest and most prestigious complexes of the Catholic Church and dates from the 4th century. It is thought to house important relics from the Holy Land. However in modern times it had been...

BENEDICT XVI CALLS FOR EVANGELIZATION OF ECONOMY
May 16, 2011

VATICAN CITY, MAY 16, 2011 (Zenit.org).- The globalized world needs a new evangelization, and though the context of today is different than that of 50 years ago, the Church's social doctrine still has the pillars to resolve social inequality. These reflections were made today by Benedict XVI when he addressed participants in an international conference sponsored by the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace. The conference marked the 50th anniversary of Pope John XXIII's encyclical "Mater et Magistra."...
